British residents normally use Absher to start a Saudi private driving licence application and book with an authorised driving school. If you already hold a full UK licence, ask your sponsor and the General Traffic Department whether you can exchange it. The route offered depends on your records and eligibility.
Choose the right route
A Saudi driving licence is not the same as permission to drive as a short-term visitor. If you are settling in Saudi Arabia, check the licence position early rather than assuming your UK licence remains sufficient after you become resident.
There are two main routes for a British expat:
- First-time Saudi licence: use the Ministry of Interior's Absher service to book or update driving training at an authorised school, then complete the training and tests assigned to you.
- Exchange of a UK licence: GOV.UK says your sponsor can help you exchange a UK driving licence for a Saudi licence. Exchange is not an automatic promise of approval; your sponsor or the traffic authority should confirm the current evidence and appointment route for your case.
The official Saudi service lists citizens and residents as its audience. Ministry of Interior guidance gives 18 as the minimum age for a private driving licence. Different rules may apply to other licence categories.
Before you apply
Make sure your Saudi identity and contact details are current. You will generally need an active Absher account linked to your Iqama and mobile number. Keep the originals and clear copies of your Iqama, passport and any existing driving licence available. If a UK licence or supporting document needs translation, use the form and language requirements shown by the authority handling your application.
A medical fitness check may be required and must be submitted through an accepted provider or system. Do not buy a medical certificate or translation from an unofficial intermediary merely because they claim it will guarantee acceptance.
If you want to request an exchange, ask your employer or sponsor to confirm:
- whether your UK licence category is eligible;
- whether the original licence, a translation or verification evidence is required;
- which Absher service or Traffic appointment applies; and
- whether any medical check, theory assessment, practical assessment or training remains necessary.
Start the application in Absher
- Sign in to the official Absher Individuals website or app.
- Open My Services, then Traffic.
- Select the service for issuing a driving licence. The current national service description says this is used to book or update training appointments at authorised driving schools.
- Read the live conditions and choose an available school and appointment.
- Confirm the booking and save the confirmation.
Menu wording and available schools can change. Use the labels in your own account rather than relying on screenshots from third-party websites. If Absher presents a different route, follow the live service instructions.
Training, tests and issue
The school assesses what training and tests apply. A previous licence or driving experience does not by itself guarantee that training will be waived. Complete only the hours and assessments assigned through the authorised process.
Before paying, check the current charge displayed by Absher, the school or the authorised payment channel. Training packages and administrative charges can change, so this guide does not quote a total. Keep payment receipts and appointment confirmations until the licence appears in your official record.
On the day, take the documents specified in the booking confirmation and arrive in time for the school's own check-in process. After you satisfy the required training, medical and testing steps, follow the official instructions for issuance. Do not drive until the Saudi authority confirms that you hold a valid licence for the vehicle category concerned.
After issue
Check your name, identity number, vehicle category and validity in Absher. GOV.UK advises drivers in Saudi Arabia to carry their driving licence and vehicle ownership papers. Also make sure the vehicle is registered, inspected where required and insured for you to drive.
If you live in Saudi Arabia, GOV.UK says you cannot renew or replace a UK driving licence as a UK resident would. Deal directly with the relevant UK licensing authority if you need clarification about the status of your UK licence.
When to get help
Contact your sponsor, the driving school or the General Traffic Department if the issue service is missing, your identity data do not match, an exchange is refused, or you are unsure which appointment to book.
