An Istiqdam appointment is an appointment with the General Department of Expatriate Affairs for a resident’s family-recruitment or family-residence case. Absher describes this appointment service as enabling users to request admittance for family members, specifically a wife and children. It should not be treated as a universal appointment for every application described informally as a “family visa”.
Choose the correct route first
- Family residence or family recruitment: this is the route for eligible dependants who will live in Saudi Arabia and, after the immigration stages are completed, obtain residence status. An Istiqdam appointment may be relevant when the official service or your case instructions require attendance.
- Family visit: this is temporary visitor permission. The official GOV.SA service directs citizens and residents to the Saudi Visa platform’s KSA Visa: official visa portal. Do not book an Istiqdam family-residence appointment merely to submit a normal family-visit application.
- Domestic-worker recruitment: this is an employment and recruitment route, not family residence. Begin with the official Musaned platform and follow the service available for the worker category and sponsor. A family-recruitment appointment must not be used as a substitute.

When to book an Istiqdam appointment
Book only when Absher presents the appointment route for your purpose or an official instruction tells you to attend. Online eligibility and case routes can differ according to the sponsor’s record, profession, dependant relationship and the stage already reached. If the expected purpose is absent, do not select a loosely related appointment category simply to obtain a slot.
Instead, check the wording in the live service and contact Absher through the support details on its official portal. Ask whether your case belongs to family recruitment, whether attendance is required, which person must attend and what documents the selected office expects.
Book through Absher
- Open Absher: official service portal directly and sign in through the official domain.
- Open the appointments area and select General Department of Expatriate Affairs.
- Choose Book an Appointment and select the family-recruitment or resident-family purpose only if that wording matches your case.
- Select the available region, branch, date and time. Availability varies, and the office shown in Absher is the one to use.
- Review the purpose and beneficiary details before confirming. Save or print the appointment confirmation and note any instructions displayed with it.
Absher also allows registered citizens and residents to manage appointments. If you need to cancel, use the appointment record in the same account rather than abandoning the slot.
Prepare for the appointment
Follow the checklist attached to the live booking. As a sensible base, keep the sponsor’s passport and Iqama, the appointment confirmation, the case or application reference, and the relevant family passports and civil-status documents available. Marriage and birth records may need the authentication and Arabic translation required for their issuing country and intended Saudi use.
Do not assume that an employer letter, qualification, salary evidence or a particular attestation is mandatory unless the official case instructions request it. Where the sponsor is employed, ask the employer’s authorised HR or government-relations representative whether it must prepare or attend with anything. Take originals and copies only as directed, and make sure names and dates match the passports.
At and after the appointment
Arrive at the branch shown on the confirmation with enough time for security and identity checks. The officer may review the file, request a correction or explain the next stage; an appointment itself is not an approval. Keep any reference provided and track the case through the official channel named by the officer. For a visit application, return to Saudi Visa; for domestic-worker recruitment, return to Musaned rather than carrying the case into the Istiqdam family-residence route.
