How to apply for a family residence visa in Saudi Arabia

Confirm the correct route first

Before gathering documents, ask your employer’s authorised HR or government-relations contact to confirm the route available for your profession, sponsorship record and family relationship. Saudi systems assess eligibility using current government records. Do not rely on old online lists of occupations, salary thresholds or relatives because these can be incomplete or superseded.

Documents to prepare

• Your passport and Iqama.
• Each dependant’s passport identity page.
• Marriage certificate for a spouse and birth certificates for children.

• Arabic translations and authentication or legalisation appropriate to the issuing country and document type.

For UK documents, check the current Saudi and UK official requirements before arranging legalisation or translation. A document accepted for one purpose is not automatically accepted for immigration. Ensure names follow the passport spelling throughout.

Application stages

1. Saudi-side request: start the family-recruitment or residence-visa service available through Absher: official service portal or the government channel specified for your case. Enter the dependant’s details exactly as shown in their passport.
2. Employer action where required: your employer may need to confirm employment data or complete an authentication step. This is not required identically in every case, so follow the live request rather than an old Chamber of Commerce tutorial.
3. Appointment or referral: if the system directs you to the General Directorate of Passports or an Istiqdam office, book the named appointment and take the originals and copies listed in the booking instructions.
4. Review and reference: save the application number and check the official status. Approval is discretionary; submitting complete documents does not guarantee a visa.
5. Overseas visa issuance: after Saudi-side authorisation, the dependant completes the visa-issuance requirements in their country of residence through the channel named on the authorisation or the official Saudi visa platform.
6. Travel and post-arrival formalities: after entry, complete the medical, insurance, biometrics and resident-ID steps that apply to the dependant. The sponsor remains responsible for keeping their status lawful.

Fees and timing

Do not budget from a dated blog figure. Government charges, medical costs, insurance, document legalisation, translation and overseas processing are separate and can vary. Use the amount shown in the official application or SADAD invoice and pay only through the named government or authorised channel. The invoice also controls its own payment deadline.

Processing depends on eligibility checks, document accuracy, appointment availability and the overseas issuing post. Avoid buying non-refundable travel until the visa has been issued and its details have been checked.
