In brief: Start with the job, sponsor and correct entry route; then prepare only the documents your employer and authorities confirm; keep UK tax, healthcare, banking and housing workstreams moving in parallel; and delay irreversible decisions until the Saudi process has credible milestones. The “90 days” are planning windows, not guaranteed processing times.
This timeline is for a British employee relocating from the UK. It is not a visa service specification, legal advice or a claim that UK2KSA is a government authority. Requirements vary by profession, family status, employer and document-issuing jurisdiction.
T-minus 90 to 60 days: validate the move
Audit the role and sponsor
Confirm the Saudi employing entity, sponsor, work location, job title, start conditions and who pays each relocation cost. Compare the offer with the contract that will be documented in Qiwa. Separate basic salary from allowances and ask how housing, medical cover, flights, school fees, shipment, probation and early termination are recorded. Do not treat a recruiter’s summary as the complete agreement.
Ask for the proposed immigration route in writing. Saudi Arabia requires the status appropriate to your purpose. Tourist, business and electronic travel permissions do not authorise ordinary local employment. Review UK2KSA’s visa overview, then verify your specific case through the Saudi authority, embassy and employer.
Choose the family sequence
Decide whether dependants travel with you or follow after your Iqama, accommodation and insurance are established. Ask whether the employer supports dependant applications and costs, and whether your recorded profession affects the route. Compare residence and visit options by purpose, healthcare, schooling, duration and renewal—not convenience alone. Do not assume a family visit status converts into residence.
T-minus 60 to 30 days: documents and UK life admin
Build a document matrix
Ask the employer for a case-specific list showing original or copy, certification, UK legalisation, Saudi embassy step, translation and post-arrival approval. Possible documents include passports, degree or professional certificate, marriage and birth certificates, police records and children’s school records—but there is no universal bundle.
Handle UK tax and records
Tell the relevant UK authorities when appropriate, including HMRC and your council. Do not assume Saudi employment automatically ends UK tax residence: keep a travel calendar, UK workdays, homes, income and ties from the day planning starts. Decide with HMRC guidance or an adviser whether you will use Self Assessment or another departure process. Retain payslips, P45/P60 documents, contracts and proof of movements.
T-minus 45 to 21 days: health and possessions
Medicines and vaccinations
Check Saudi health advice and vaccine recommendations early; GOV.UK suggests doing so at least eight weeks before travel where possible. List each medicine by active ingredient. Saudi controls can differ from UK prescription status, and approval may be needed for some products. Obtain an official prescription or clinician letter with medicine, dosage, quantity and signature where required. Never stop or substitute treatment without your clinician.
Confirm legal entry, permitted quantity, packing and any cold-chain plan with the Saudi authority and airline. UK prescriptions are not accepted for dispensing in Saudi Arabia, so identify how continuing care and a Saudi prescription will be arranged. Check that the insurer network includes relevant clinicians.
Ship, store, sell or carry
Create an inventory with photographs and serial numbers. Separate hand-luggage essentials, accompanied baggage, freight and items to leave behind. Ask the mover in writing about customs brokerage, prohibited or restricted items, insurance, storage and delivery after clearance. Do not put passports, medicines, original certificates, valuables, work equipment or first-month clothing in an unaccompanied shipment.
T-minus 14 days: make the travel pack
- Recheck FCDO Saudi entry, safety and health advice; sign up for alerts.
- Confirm passport validity against the live rule. Current FCDO guidance for a full British citizen passport says the expiry date should be at least six months after arrival, but authorities set the rule and it can change.
- Carry the correct visa or entry evidence, employer invitation/contact, accommodation, insurance, prescriptions and essential originals.
- Store encrypted copies separately and give a trusted UK contact the emergency plan.
- Confirm airport collection, out-of-hours HR contact, first reporting location and what happens if the flight is disrupted.
- Keep accessible funds for transport, food, temporary data and an admin delay; avoid carrying undeclared restricted amounts or items.
Arrival day to day 7: preserve evidence and complete the hand-off
Check your entry record and retain travel evidence. Obtain a Saudi number or temporary connectivity without sharing account control. Meet the employer, complete verified medical or biometric steps, and obtain a named owner for work authorisation, insurance and Iqama. Do not start using a status for a purpose it does not permit because someone says it will be corrected later.
Inspect temporary accommodation, record damage and locate the nearest suitable clinic. Contact family once safely installed and test your backup payment method.
Days 7 to 30: establish resident life
After Iqama issuance, check identity and occupation data. Activate Absher through an official channel, secure Nafath verification where required, and keep your Saudi number in your own name. Register the accurate SPL National Address after moving to stable accommodation. Complete bank onboarding, verify the IBAN with payroll, and reconcile first pay with the contract.
Confirm your health-insurance network and each dependant’s status. Move into housing only with the applicable documented lease, traceable payments and a photographic handover record. Update addresses across employer, bank and insurer records. The detailed Absher activation guide and SNB account guide may help with individual tasks, but current official screens control.
Fallback plan: when the schedule slips
- Iqama delay: ask for the exact blocker, reference, lawful work instruction and interim insurance/access plan.
- Salary delay: preserve attendance, contract and bank evidence; request a written payroll date and escalation owner.
- Housing delay: extend flexible accommodation before it expires and agree reimbursement in writing.
- Family delay: keep children’s school and medical continuity in the UK; do not book travel until each person’s status is confirmed.
- Document problem: ask the receiving body to specify the defect before paying for another certification, legalisation or translation.
Important caveats
Entry rules, health measures, app names and document requirements change. Employers, airlines and authorities control their own decisions and timing. Recheck official sources before submission and again before travel; do not copy an old checklist wholesale.
When to get help
Use a UK cross-border tax adviser if residence, property, company ownership or investments make your departure complex. Ask a regulated immigration or Saudi legal professional where the work route, sponsor or contract is unclear. Use a qualified translator/notary for consequential documents. Contact your clinician and the Saudi medicine authority for controlled or essential medication questions. The British Embassy cannot provide personalised relocation or Saudi visa advice.
